Our First Anniversary Vacation: Dryden & Port Austin, MI
May 12-15, 2006
Seven Lakes County Park, Dryden, Michigan.
Despite it being a cold and rainy day, Dan was interested in stopping and taking a look around. After the school group left the nature center, we had a look around and then decided to head off on the nearest trail. I was trying to take a picture of a duck, but it was camera shy; it swam away.

Another place along the trail. After going out on this little boardwalk, we walked along the trail some more and over the bridge you see in the distance. About a quarter of a mile later we saw a beaver dam and some wildflowers.
As we were walking, we passed a school group. Dan says the teachers looked at us like we were nuts for being out there in such lousy weather (when we didn't have to be)!
Although I was NOT having any fun trekking through the cold and wet forest, it did remind me of the nature trails we walked through (in better weather) at the Fenner Nature Center in Lansing when Dan and I were courting. The same Fenner Nature Center where Dan proposed to me.

Here's our little cottage at Lake Vista Resort. where we stayed in Port Austin. We had a first hand view of Lake Huron.
If you walk to the side of the cottage and look east, here's the view. The long blue thing is the pier. There's a harbor and a park on the other side. We took a walk over there and to the end on Saturday. Took us an hour to go there and back. More pictures from the pier follow below. Our first evening here, a pet bunny got loose and was hopping along this path. The owner
finally caught him (or her) a short time later.

This is the view from our cottage to the north; The seagulls liked to hang out on the sandbar.
This is the view from the front of our cottage to the west.
Here's a view from the courtyard. On your left are the cottages, on your right beyond the gazebo is the motel, and the thing that looks like a big house in the far background is the office and where the proprietors live.
On Friday, after making me trek through the mud and pouring rain in Seven Lakes County Park, I told Dan he had to cook me a nice meal . We had a delicious meal of pork chops, rice, and carrots.
Now that you've seen the kitchen, here's our dining area. The jury's still out on whether the paneling is real wood or not. Regardless, it was nice.
A very important part of the cottage on this cold weekend: the heater. In case you're curious, the door opens onto one of the bedrooms. The bed you see to the left is on the sun porch.
The sun porch where we spent most of our time indoors. This is looking to the west. Dan is watching TV, by the way, probably something on the Sci-Fi channel.
Here's a view of Lake Vista from the pier.
Here's a view from the far end of the pier, looking east.
Here's a view from the end of the far end of the pier looking west.
Here's a picture of Dan taking a picture of me standing at the far end of the pier. Behind where I'm standing is a lighthouse far in the distance (not the one in subsequent photos).
On Saturday we went walking around town and went to an art show at the playhouse.
On Sunday the weather finally cleared up so we decided to head out to Grindstone City Park. About 5 miles east of where we were staying.

Can you tell I liked to photograph the birch tree?
After leaving Grindstone City, we went to Lighthouse Park near Port Hope. Here's a view of the lake from the back of the lighthouse.
Another view from the back of the lighthouse.
Here's the lighthouse. The grey building next to it is a museum. The little red brick building is an outhouse (still in use).
This is the oil house in front of the lighthouse museum.
The sign on the oil house.
After our outing on Sunday, we decided Dan should fire up the grill. Hamburgers and leftovers were on the menu.
Breakwater on the sandbar Sunday.
More waves breaking.
Some sun on the water Sunday.
A vacation coming to a close. The sun setting on the water.
